Aviva StepUP Loans

Everyone deserves to feel in control of their financial wellbeing. At Aviva, we can support your journey towards a financially secure future with our microfinance services. Through StepUP and the No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS), offered in partnership with Good Shepherd NZ, Aviva offers you access to financial resources that can improve the quality of your life, and the lives of your children. 

Aviva's microfinance services provide access to safe, fair and affordable credit that, in conjunction with other services, can support you to gain – or regain - financial control and independence. You do not have to be a client of Aviva's or experiencing family violence to qualify for these services.

What is a StepUP loan?

StepUP is a low fixed-interest loan with no fees, for people on limited incomes. You can borrow up to $5,000 and there are no hidden charges.

  • Safe, fair and affordable credit
  • Available to those who are eligible for a Community Services Card
  • For amounts from $1,000 to $5,000
  • Interest rate of 6.99%, with no other charges or fees
  • Up to three years to make the repayments
  • For new, essential items and some housing, education, vehicle or health costs – not for debt consolidation or repayment
  • lending criteria and terms apply

StepUP is a community initiative which Aviva offers in partnership with Good Shepherd New ZealandBNZ, and the Ministry of Social Development.

How do I access a StepUP loan?

Access to StepUP may be available to you if you are a Canterbury resident and answer yes to the following questions:

  • Have you lived at your current address for three months or more?
  • Do you have a Community Services Card, or would you qualify for one?
  • Do you want to buy an essential or important item or service?
  • Have you tried to access the item/service through Work and Income and been turned down?
  • Do you have enough flexibility in your budget to repay a loan?
  • Are you willing to repay a loan?      

Aviva's Microfinance Worker will help you to collect the documents that you need, complete the application and help make sure that you can afford to repay the loan. Loans can be held in individual or joint names.

What can I use my loan for?

If you are eligible for a loan, you will need to agree to its purpose with our Aviva Microfinance Worker before your application is forwarded to the BNZ for consideration. Loans can been used for things like:

  • Second-hand cars
  • Furniture
  • Car repairs
  • Whiteware such as fridges or washing machines
  • Heat pumps - for houses which are owner-occupied only
  • Adult education
  • Computers

Loans cannot be used for existing debts, or ongoing costs such as electricity.
