No Interest Loans Scheme

Everyone deserves to feel in control of their financial wellbeing. Aviva can support your journey towards a financially secure future with our microfinance services. Through our No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS), offered in partnership with Good Shepherd NZ and Kiwibank, Aviva offers you access to financial resources that can improve the quality of your life, and the lives of your children.

Aviva's microfinance services provide access to safe, fair and affordable credit that, in conjunction with other services, can support you to gain – or regain - financial control and independence. You do not have to be a client of Aviva's or experiencing family violence to qualify for these services.

What is the No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS)?

  • Safe, fair and affordable credit
  • Targets the financially excluded and limited income earners
  • Up to $1,000 (Aviva clients may access limits up to $2,000)
  • No interest; no charges; no fees
  • For new, essential items and some housing/health costs – not for debt consolidation or repayment, and not cash loans

Loan amounts vary up to a maximum of $1,000. Generally loans are repaid over a period of 12 months although exceptions are possible in certain circumstances. Repayments typically average between $10 and $20 per week, depending on your budget, and the amount of the loan.

How do I access Aviva NILS?

Access to Aviva NILS may be available to you if you are a Canterbury resident and answer yes to the following questions:

  • Have you lived at your current address for three months or more?
  • Do you have a Community Services Card, or are you on a limited income?
  • Do you want to buy an essential or important item or service?
  • Have you tried to access the item/service through Work and Income and been turned down?
  • Do you have enough flexibility in your budget to repay a loan?
  • Are you willing to repay a loan?

What can I use my loan for?

If you are eligible for a loan, you will need to agree its purpose with our Aviva Microfinance Worker before it is approved. Loans have been used for:

  • Furniture
  • Car repairs
  • Whiteware
  • Heat pumps (if the house is owner-occupied)
  • Adult education
  • Scooter
  • Technology e.g. computers
  • Rental bond support may be available for clients of Aviva or our partner agencies.
