Volunteer Award

18th of June, 2019

Did you know that in 2017/18, Aviva benefitted from 8,835 hours of GIFTED time? That is almost 170 hours a week, or 4 people working 42.5 hours a week, all year!!! Whilst some of this time came from staff and Board, the majority came from volunteers. We have to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helps us, whether it is occasionally (such as during Annual Appeal), or regularly. We couldn't do a lot of what we do without your selfless support!

Bev Shepherd and Renata Hopkins, two of our fabulous volunteers received Volunteering Canterbury Volunteer Recognition Awards on 17 June 2019.

Bev has been volunteering with Aviva for 18 months, helping out generally once a week for half a day with administrative tasks. Filing, copying, picking up donations, refuelling cars or dropping off appeal buckets – Bev gets roped into it all! Her supervisor Tania says “she is always willing to go above and beyond with a smile and willingness. We are so grateful to have such a willing, efficient, flexible volunteer of time and tasks - a Volunteer extraordinaire!”

Renata has been with the Sexual Assault Support Service Canterbury, run by Aviva in partnership with START, for over 12 months. Renata’s mother had been a volunteer when Aviva was still a women’s refuge and it was a natural interest area for Renata to explore when she decided she wanted to become a volunteer. “Aviva was the first place I looked and I saw SASSC. I hadn’t even heard about it before. It seemed really worthwhile” she says. “You’re with some very vulnerable people and although you can’t make it better for them, you can make sure they are as supported as possible.”

Aviva, like many other organisations, relies on the generosity of caring individuals to play an active part in their community by gifting their time, skills and energy to help others. If you’re interested in volunteering with us, there are several ways. You can volunteer regularly like Renata and Bev, or just for one off projects.
