Residential Services

Aviva provides 24-hour access to safe, temporary accommodation for adults and children requiring immediate safety from family and/or sexual violence or risk of family and/or sexual violence. We do not operate a safe house, but can ensure that you have access to one, or we can arrange alternative, safe accommodation for you, regardless of gender.

Who can access temporary, safe accommodation?

Anyone, of any age or gender.

You do not have to have experienced physical violence to seek access to temporary accommodation. If you:

  • feel unsafe;
  • fear for your children's safety but not your own;
  • are worried your feelings may lead to violent behaviours,

you can still access safe, temporary accommodation.

How do I access temporary, safe accommodation?

Phone Aviva on our free crisis and support line 0800 AVIVA NOW (0800 28482 669) 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A brief assessment of your suitability and safety requirements will be undertaken on the phone by a trained Family Support Worker (FSW). If you meet the criteria for a Safe House (for women and children), the FSW will make arrangements for a Safe House provider to contact you. The Safe House provider will complete a longer assessment.

If the Safe Houses are full, or if a Safe House is not suitable for you, or for men/other genders, we can still arrange alternative accommodation (e.g. a motel). This may be the case if there are alcohol/drug issues, unmanaged mental health issues, or if you have your own issues of using violence.

What can I expect while in a Safe House?
  • To meet with a worker on a daily basis during the week
  • To have access to the 24-hour crisis line
  • To have access to emergency clothing and food when you are admitted
  • To be made aware of your rights
  • To have access to a safe place
  • To have the offer of ongoing support when you leave
